Saturday 27 January 2024 - Slow Stags

Welcome to I, Punter, in which the author muses on life and recommends a weekly bet in reward for his reader’s patience. I am writing this on 25 January. That means Christmas Day was a month ago. That time has shot by; yet why does January seem to be never ending? There’s still six days of it left. I’ve either uncovered a glitch in the matrix or I’ve just become a very obvious blogger. It’s the latter. Last weekend’s recommended double was a loser, thanks to Derby County’s inability to break down the brick wall that must have been constructed around Lincoln City’s goal the night before. The Rams had sixty-six percent possession, twelve corners and nineteen shots on target (plus about the same amount of shots off-target). They were the right pick but I still felt like a right prick for backing them. 0-0. My other selection, Juventus, won 0-3 and they now sit top of Serie A where I predict they will stay. To date I have tipped Juventus five times and they have yet to let me dow...

Saturday 20 January 2024 - The Unbearable Drabness of The Perky Punter

Welcome to I, Punter, in which the author muses on life and recommends a weekly bet in reward for his reader’s patience. Photo by Maria Bobrova on Unsplash I’m afraid it’s been one of those weeks so straight to business.  (Nothing dreadful, just the unbearable drabness of being me.) Last weekend’s recommended double was a winner! I hope you were on and thank you Crewe (2-1) and Wrexham (2-0) for franking the form I had identified. Since the start of the blog I have “hypothetically” bet £440 and got back £573.70 for a profit of £133.70 after deduction of stake. It is possible to make a profit from betting; just don’t expect to get rich overnight - those that do are the ones most likely to get into trouble - and consider the endeavour a marathon rather than a sprint. Remember The Happy Hooker? I’m The Perky Punter. This weekend I am tipping two away sides for my recommended win double: Derby County (8/11) who make the relatively short trip to Lincoln City (kick off three pm on...

Saturday 13 January 2024 - Do it. Do it Now.

Welcome to I, Punter, in which the author muses on life and recommends a weekly bet in reward for his reader’s patience. Photo by Brian Jones on Unsplash I am doing Dry January.  In fairness, prior to this I have done Dry January February March April May June July August September October November December January February March April May June July August September October November December January February March April May June July August September October November December January February March April May June July August September October November December so it’s not much of a struggle if I’m being honest.  But if you are doing Dry January and finding it tougher going than me, take heart from the fact that you are almost halfway through the month.  Or just have a drink, go on, you know you want to.   Mansfield Town are bottlers.  Last Saturday they had the opportunity to go top of League Two but the Stags were 0-1 down in under two minutes at which poi...

Saturday 6 January 2024 - Happy New Year (Xmas Is Over)

Welcome to I, Punter, in which the author muses on life and recommends a weekly bet in reward for his reader’s patience. Photo by freestocks on Unsplash The great thing about January, other than it drawing Christmas to a close, is that lazy bloggers like me can get an easy five hundred words out of their New Year's resolutions and the life-enhancing changes they are planning to make in the coming months. My resolution for 2024 is that I am not going to be a lazy blogger so I won’t be doing that. Instead, now that we are halfway through the football season, I am going to disclose the selection process behind my tips and how profitable they have been to date. Each week since Saturday 5 August 2023 I have been tipping a football-based win double. These days I bet almost exclusively on football. As much as I love horse racing, the “custodians” of the game are doing it no favours plus I no longer have the free time to put the study in. Also, if I back a horse and it makes a mista...
