Saturday 28 October 2023 - Every Little Helps

Another winning double (sort of).  But more of that later. On Sunday we needed some groceries.  It was late afternoon, the shops were shut and once upon a time that would have been that; but we are living in the twenty-first century and my wife did a Tesco Whoosh shop.  This was a new one on me, but it is a mini-online shop delivered by an Uber driver in around twenty minutes.  I suppose that’s why it’s called Whoosh.   As promised the delivery came.  We opened the bag and there were eight cans of Kronenbourg 1664 Lager and three bottles of Desperados Tequila Beer within.  We had ordered milk, eggs, not a good time.  My wife phoned Customer Services who apologised, refunded our shop and said we could keep the beer.  The catch?  I have not had a drink since 20 January 2020.  I suspect the person expecting the beer took it worse than I did. On Monday we did manage some shopping and on Tuesday I woke up looking forward to opening ...

Saturday 21 October 2023 - Slip Slidin' Away

Photo by Luís Sousa on Unsplash The cat is still alive.  But more of that in a moment. On Sunday evening I drove to Chesterfield to pick up my wife and daughter from the railway station.  I had deposited them there on Saturday afternoon in brilliant autumn sunshine, but the nights have drawn in and on this foray my middle-aged eyes struggled to navigate through the gloom. I had better visibility playing the fog level of Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 on the Mega Drive.  I appreciate there are far worse things to worry about in the world right now, but it seems with each passing week another part of me either stops working or threatens to drop off.  Welcome to I, Punter. Fair play to Bradford City.  If it's a dead cat bounce the cat must be made of rubber. The Bantams have clearly turned their fortunes around and last Saturday left Plough Lane - which for sponsorship reasons is currently masquerading as the Cherry Red Records Stadium - with all three points and my ho...

Saturday 14 October 2023 - Uranus is Massive

Last Wednesday I went to see the actor and comedian Peter Serafinowicz who was in Nottingham touring a show based on his character Brian Butterfield.  While queuing to enter the venue, I was accused of being skinny which made me cachinnate (every day is a learning day) almost as much as Brian Butterfield did.  I am only skinny in the same way that Uranus is skinny compared to Saturn and Jupiter.  It is still a gas giant.  In the kingdom of the blind the one-eyed man is king and last Wednesday night I was the king of midlife obesity.  It felt like a lottery win. Last Saturday’s recommended double also felt like a lottery win, with Leicester City and Juventus both winning 2-0 for a profit of £35.20 on the day and an overall profit of £47.53 since the start of the blog in August.  This is my tenth post of the 2023/2024 football season and in addition to my current challenge of making £100 profit in October, I now have the pressure of making it five winning wee...

Saturday 7 October 2023 - Tempus Fugit

Photo by Abigail Keenan on Unsplash Time flies.  Don’t believe me?  I began this blog at the height of summer and I am writing it now with the lights on at six pm.  It’s later than you think. To date I have recommended eight football bets, all win doubles, at a total stake of £160 - eek.  I have won £172.33 for a profit of £12.33 - phew.  The fact that I am both in profit and disappointed is encouraging. I need a challenge to focus my mind and I have come up with a financial one: to make £100 profit from my recommended win doubles in October. To achieve this I will have to do better than last weekend’s double, although judging by the 3-3 scoreline Wrexham would likely have edged it had they not had a player sent off in the first half.  My other selection Cardiff cruised to victory over Rotherham 2-0. I am writing this on 5 October and already Leicester City (8/15) are odds on to win the Championship.  They have also won nine out of ten league games ...
